Who We Are

The Hoboken Community Center (HCC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization located at 1301 Washington Street. The building opened its doors in 1927 as the Hoboken-North Hudson YMCA and served the dual purpose of providing housing to low-income men and offering affordable recreational programs for the local community.

Today, the HCC manages the residential facility which was extensively renovated in 2013. It contains three levels of affordable single room occupancy for 96 men.

The HCC also contains three separate levels of currently vacant former recreation space totaling approximately 37,500 square feet. In 2010, the YMCA closed its doors to the recreational side of its operations due to insufficient funding. Now, the HCC is now focused on the revitalization and renovation of this space.

Our Vision

The HCC envisions remodeling the vacant former YMCA spaces into new community-focused spaces for a variety of functions. The HCC retained an experienced planning firm, and, in collaboration with community partners and stakeholders, evaluated the feasibility of the remodeling project. The HCC also conducted a public survey and held multiple stakeholder meetings to identify the community’s needs and preferences regarding possible uses of these spaces.

The proposed project may include renovation of the historic lap pool in the lower level of the building, the gymnasium, and three vacant levels of the facility to provide a variety of spaces to meet the community’s needs for flexible, multi-purpose recreation, classroom, meeting, and culturally-focused space.

The proposed project will also include infrastructure improvements to repair or replace elements and systems within the building that are beyond their expected service life, as well as necessary building improvements.
